Racing burst back on the tube last weekend, but facing extra competition this year from the Winter Olympics, FOX’s 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series audience got off to a slow start at Daytona.
Sunday’s Advanced Auto Parts Clash on FOX Sports 1 eclipsed qualifying coverage for the Daytona 500 on the FOX broadcast network, if only fractionally. The Clash scored a 1.35 rating, averaging 2.55m households, while the race for the pole that led into it on FOX averaged a 1.34/2.032. Both were down from 2017, with the Clash drawing a 1.2/1.8m viewers last year despite a rainout that pushed the race to Sunday morning. Last year’s qualifying show on FOX scored a 1.4/2.3m.
Final eliminations coverage of the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series was also down from its 2017 numbers, but with the caveat that this year’s finals aired on FS1. The finals on Sunday afternoon scored a 0.48 rating and averaged 782,000 household viewers, down from a 0.79/1.2m last year on FOX but still up over 2016’s 0.40 on FS1.
