In advance of BMW’s formal entry in Season 5 of the FIA Formula E Championship with Andretti Autosport, Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt revealed before the kickoff of Season 4 in Hong Kong that the program is well ahead of schedule.
“We will begin on track testing with a fully developed, BMW e-motor in the new-for-Season 5 chassis from Spark by March 2018,” said Marquardt. “This puts us ahead of our original schedule by some months. The new car will have a complete BMW drivetrain as well as rear suspension and all of the electronics package”
Marquardt revealed that extensive work has been carried out with the use of new silicone carbide materials for the all of the wiring. The use of this material in wiring and semi-conductors resolves the issue of power and efficiency losses that can significantly impede the e-motor’s performance.
The integration of BMW Motorsport with Andretti Autosport steps up with the start of Season 4 (pictured above in Hong Kong). BMW Motorsport technical staff are now fully integrated with Andretti Autosport’s technical team with the main goal of capturing data that can be used to inform the development of BMW’s program heading into next season.
