One of the last big racing weekends of the year with NASCAR, Formula 1 and NHRA produced mixed numbers TV-wise.
The Championship 4-deciding Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix scored a 2.24 rating on NBC, averaging 3.6 million viewers. That’s down from a 2.41/4.0m for this race last year on the same network.
The Xfinity Series race from Phoenix on Saturday was up slightly, scoring a 1.0/1.5m on NBC, compared with a 0.63/1.0m last year. However, the 2016 race aired on NBCSN.
Still in the Americas this week, meaning a more palatable time slot for the U.S. audience, the F1 Brazilian Grand Prix scored a 0.33 rating and averaged 570,000 viewers for its live telecast Sunday morning on NBCSN. That’s up a tick from last year’s 0.31/505,000 and about 100,000 viewers higher than the live F1 telecasts on NBCSN from outside the Americas, which typically start three hours or more earlier.
The NHRA’s Mello Yello Drag Racing Series finale at Pomona scored a 0.20/336,000 for the live telecast of Sunday’s finals on Fox Sports 1. That’s up from a 0.16/244,000 for last year’s live FS1 telecast. Interestingly, the viewer total is almost identical to the final appearance of the NHRA’s top series on ESPN for Pomona’s season finale in 2015, when the delayed telecast averaged 335,000.
