Cactus king Kevin Harvick swept Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practices Saturday at Phoenix Raceway.
An eight-time winner at the 1-mile facility, Harvick laid down a lap of 134.973mph in the final 50-minute session ahead of Sunday’s elimination race. Kyle Busch was second fastest at 134.333mph. Both Harvick and Busch are already locked into the championship race next weekend.
Completing the top five were Kasey Kahne (134.328mph), Martin Truex Jr. (134.313mph) and Clint Bowyer (134.263mph). By points, Truex is also locked into the Championship 4.
Sixth fastest was Jimmie Johnson, who is the last driver on the playoff grid. Johnson’s best lap was 134.208mph.
Matt Kenseth was seventh fastest at 134.128mph. Denny Hamlin (134.093mph) and Brad Keselowski (133.879mph) were eighth and ninth fastest, respectively. Ironically, it is Hamlin who is the first driver outside of a playoff spot, which is occupied by Keselowski.
Pole-sitter Ryan Blaney completed the top 10. Blaney ran a 133.814mph lap.
There were no incidents in the session.
The slowest playoff driver was Chase Elliott. The No. 24 clocked in 17th on the speed chart at 133.333mph.
