
Castroneves keeps Penske on top in Petit practice
Team Penske has topped half of the sessions run so far at Petit Le Mans, and Helio Castroneves used the fourth practice session to move the fastest lap (1m11.968s) to its lowest point so far with qualifying just hours away.
The Brazilian's No. 6 ORECA 07-Gibson was nearly matched by Tequila Patron ESM's Brendon Hartley in his No. 2 Nissan Onroak DPi (+0.023s) and Pipo Derani in the sister No. 22 Nissan (+0.051s).
GT Le Mans features an assortment of familiar cars and characters in the top three, as Risi Competizione's Toni Vilander went fastest in his No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTE (1m17.497s). Likely GTLM Driver's champion Antonio Garcia was second in his Corvette Racing C7.R (+0.020s) and BMW Team RLL's Martin Tomczyk kept things close in his No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM (+0.186s).
After flirting with the fastest GT Daytona lap on Thursday, Connor De Phillippi finally got it done by the slimmest of margins in the No. 29 Land Motorsport Audi R8 LMS GT3 (1m20.175s) ahead of Scuderia Corsa's Matteo Cressoni in the No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 (+0.065) and the newest signing to the Wilhemina modeling agency, Sage Karam, whose Blue Steel 3GT Racing Lexus RCF GT3 (+0.241s) was further back in third.
Other than a minor clash between a Corvette and the Rebellion Racing ORECA 07 that send the prototype into the tire barriers, the one-hour session under warm skies was clean.
