NASCAR community chips in for hurricane relief
As many across the country continue to offer support and assistance to those affected by Hurricane Harvey, the NASCAR community is also coming together to do its part.
This weekend, vehicles in all three NASCAR national series will bring awareness to the situation with "Texas Strong" decals run on the A-post. The NASCAR Foundation has also announced any donations made from race fans will go towards providing disaster relief supplies. Items include bottled water, hygiene products, and ready-to-eat food.
Team Penske sponsor Shell is donating funds with an initial contribution of $1 million to the American Red Cross. Shell is also giving up its traditional yellow colors on the No. 22 Ford at Richmond Raceway next weekend to run a red and white paint scheme for the Red Cross. The hope is the car will draw more attention to those in need.
"Our roots run extremely deep in Houston, and we are committed to doing our part to help the city move on in the aftermath of Harvey," said Bruce Culpepper, Shell U.S. president. "Shell employs nearly 20,000 people in the U.S., and nearly half of them are being directly impacted by Harvey."
Driver Joey Logano has opened a donation portal through the Joey Logano Foundation. Funds will be collected on behalf of the American Red Cross for disaster relief.
"Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast have suffered a disaster of historic size – one that is going to take months if not years of recovery," Logano said. "In the last couple of days, we have seen sports icons and organizations step up for Texas and the Gulf Coast. With our strong ties to Shell and the community, we wanted to rally the passionate NASCAR base for this cause as well."
Friday during his pre-race press conference Friday at Darlington Raceway, Elliott Sadler revealed he and his wife Amanda have decided to donate his race winnings from the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Xfinity Series race to hurricane victims.
"Before I answer any questions, I do want to send my thoughts and prayers to everybody in Houston. We have some friends down there, and we've been getting some video, and direct contact from them and what they're going through nobody should have to go through that kind of devastation," said Sadler. "We've been blown away, my wife and I, from everybody's generosity from people donating so much money and time.
"One of our sponsors, Oskar Blues, is canning water and sending it down. [NFL Houston Texans star] JJ Watt, I just saw a little while ago he's already reached $14 million, and that's absolutely amazing. My wife and I decided on our way down [here] that we were going to take my portion of the winnings from this weekend and donate it to the flood relief victims in Houston.
"That's so much a bigger scale of what America is all about. The videos of people helping each other are second to none. ... My wife and I are blown away by what we've seen, and we want to get onboard with that."
