Gasly replaces Buemi for NY Formula E races

Reigning GP2 champion Pierre Gasly (pictured) is the driver Renault e.dams has chosen to stand in for Formula E points leader Sebastien Buemi for this weekend's Qualcomm New York City ePrix.

Gasly, who is racing in the Japanese-based Super Formula series this year alongside Red Bull F1 test duties, has been called up by the two-time Formula E teams' champions as Buemi has a clashing commitment for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship at the Nurburgring.

He has yet to drive the Renault Z.E 16, which Buemi has driven to victory in six of the eight races so far this season.

"I deeply regret this clash between the WEC and Formula E, which could have been avoided," team co-owner Alain Prost said. "However, we have to move forward and we are very pleased to welcome Pierre Gasly. Racing in New York is going to be a challenge as he makes his Formula E debut at the end of the championship. But looking at our preparation, we are confident and our goal remains the same, to score the maximum points to strengthen our lead in the championship."

Fellow Jean-Paul Driot added: "This situation is regrettable because even without this clash, the championship is not a certainty. Despite this unfortunate setback, I hope that with Pierre Gasly's invaluable assistance, Renault e.dams will be able to defend its winning chances in Montreal."

Buemi currently holds a 32-point lead over nearest rival Lucas di Grassi, with a maximum of 58 points on offer from this weekend's doubleheader in New York. Renault e.dams is 58 points ahead of Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport in the teams' standings.
