Rockenfeller, Paffett escape major injury in DTM crash at Norisring

Audi's Mike Rockenfeller suffered a minor fracture in his foot and Mercedes-AMG's Gary Paffett is "good" after a hard crash in

Sunday's DTM race

at the Norisring.

The Sunday DTM race had to be red-flagged on lap 33 following the heavy accident. After contact with Jamie Green, Paffett had a huge impact with the barrier in the run to the first corner, lost control and rotated at a high rate of speed into the driver's side of Rockenfeller's car. Both were taken to the hospital in Nuremberg for examination. Rockenfeller suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

Paffett, who walked away with bruises, said he's been "battered and bruised" but was grateful for the safety of the cars and the series' medical team.

Rockenfeller, a DTM champion and 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner who recently ran the 12 Hours of Sebring with Corvette Racing in GTLM, hopes to make a quick return to the car.

“The start to the second race was okay, and then things became turbulent," he said. "Our strategy wasn’t perfect, but we still need to discuss this. Then the accident with Gary (Paffett) happened. There was nothing I could do. I was already inside the turn. There was a huge impact. I’m happy that our cars are so safe. But, unfortunately, I have a midfoot fracture. Maybe it’s not so bad. I hope to be racing again in Moscow.”

Said Audi head of Motorsport Dieter Gass: "Mike’s (Rockenfeller) injury is obviously weighing on us to some extent. We wish him a speedy recovery and are happy that nothing more serious happened to him and Gary (Paffett).”
