Following a successful test, 20-year-old Robby Foley will make his debut in IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda with P1 Motorsports, at the famous Watkins Glen International road course June 29-July 2. Foley, a resident of Randolph, NJ, and Mechanical Engineering student at Auburn University, will drive the #17 Ligier JSP3 at the famous New York circuit.
P1 Motorsports, based in Coconut Creek, Fla. is a new name to racing, but the team is assembled of seasoned veteran’s and have proven to be successful so far this season. Team owner JC Perez has a great passion for racing and drives one of the teams Ligier’s alongside series veteran Kenton Koch.
The opportunity presents a unique challenge for Foley, as he must adapt to a new type of car.
“It’s a refreshing new challenge and one I’m really looking forward too. I have been driving a variety of Mazda MX-5’s over the past few seasons, so the prototype will be a big adjustment, but I have a strong group around me to help get me up to speed.”
As a Mazda Scholarship driver in 2016, Foley racked up three wins in the ultra-competitive Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup, which tied for most in the series. With this experience Robby will be well prepared for the 45-minute race format, allowing him to focus on learning the car.
“The goal as a young driver is to always move up, and I have to thank JC, Alberto and the entire P1 Motorsports team for the opportunity to prove myself at the next level," said Foley. "I’ve always dreamed of driving a high downforce, fast racecar and to do it at such an amazing, historic track is really special and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”
