Longtime Road Atlanta track volunteer killed in on-track accident
Hazel Harrell, a longtime worker at Road Atlanta, was killed in an accident during a motorcycle race on the Braselton track on Saturday afterrnoon.
WSB-TV reports Harrell was working as a corner judge during the race when she was struck and killed by one of the motorcycles. The Hall County medical examiner identified the victim as Harrell, who was 60 years old.
Road Atlanta released a statement on Sunday confirming the loss of one of its own.
"We at Road Atlanta are devastated to confirm the passing of one of our own, Hazel Harrell, this weekend. A member of the Road Atlanta family for nearly two decades, we will miss her sorely. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends and the entire racing community that knew and loved her."
Friends told WSB that Harrell was a fixture at Turn 7, having volunteered at the track for about 15 years.
An investigation is underway to determine what caused the crash.
RACER extends its sympathies.
