1-2-3 for Toyota on Spa WEC FP3
Toyota Gazoo Racing ended the pre-qualifying on-track running this morning at Spa-Francorchamps with a 1-2-3 in Free Practice 3. The best time from its trio of TS050 Hybrids was a 1:55.233 by Japanese driver Kazuki Nakajima in the No. 8.
The FP1 and 2-topping No. 7 of Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi finished up second, with the low-downforce No. 9 TS050 coming in third after a 1:55.448.
Behind, the two Porsche 919 Hybrids both ended up over a second back from Nakajima's best time, with the best coming from German Andre Lotterer, who put the No. 1 fourth and ahead of the No. 2 after reeling off an early 1:56.404.
All five factory hybrids ended up completing a good amount of laps in the session, though there were numerous near-misses out on-track while lapping traffic. Thankfully they all finished the session without any incidents.
In LMP2 though, it was a different story, with the No. 13 Vaillante Rebellion ORECA losing its left-front wheel during a lap, and the No. 38 Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA of Thomas Laurent clipping the Clearwater Racing Ferrari, damaging its front-end.
Both cars ended up finishing high up the order, though. Quickest across the line was Alex Lynn for G-Drive Racing – the Englishman reeling off a 2:01.708 – with No. 13 Rebellion and No. 38 DC Racing ORECAs ending up second and third in the class.
AF Corse put Ferrari atop the GTE Pro standings, finishing 1-2 in the class with team newcomer Alessandro Pier Guidi putting the No. 71 Ferrari 488 first with a 2:14.904, marking the first time the Italian had led a session in the WEC. The No. 51 ended up second, with the No. 67 Chip Ganassi Ford GT third, 0.196 and 0.841 off Pier Guidi, respectively.
At the bottom of the class was the No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage, which ended up first in FP2 yesterday after a flash of pace from Marco Sorensen. This time around, the reigning champions in the car 3.2 seconds off the ultimate GTE Pro pace.
Matteo Cairoli headed GTE Am for Dempsey Proton Racing, steering the team's Porsche 911 to fourth in the overall GTE Am standings in the process with a 2:15.893.
UP NEXT: The qualifying sessions for Saturday's 6 Hours of Spa is set to begin later today at 2:50 p.m. local time in the Ardennes Forest.
