Wayne Taylor Racing leads COTA IMSA practice

Cadillac DPis again found themselves atop the time sheet as Wayne Taylor Racing's Jordan Taylor and Action Express' Christian Fittipaldi led a tightly-packed Prototype class in the first WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice session at Circuit of The Americas. Taylor ran a 1m57.116mph lap in the No. 10 Cadillac DPi-V.R, followed by Fittipaldi (+0.077s). With Scott Sharp landing the Tequila Patron ESM Nissan DPi in third (+0.184s), the top three entries were separated by less than two-tenths of a second. In fourth was the Mazda Motorsports No. 55 RT24-P DPi driven by Tristan Nunez (+0.746s) and Eric Curran was fifth fastest in the Whelen Engineering Cadillac (+0.818s).

Just a few tenths separated the top cars in GTLM, led by Joey Hand's No. 66 Ford GT at 2m3.739s lap, followed by Martin Tomczyk's RLL BMW M6 (+0.142s) and the sister Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe (+0.147).

Patricio O'Ward was fastest in the three-car PC field with a 2m00.522s lap, good enough for 10th overall. The BAR1 Motorsports ORECA FLM09s were further behind; Stefan Wilson ran a 2m05.223 lap and Buddy Rice a 2m07.927mph.

In GT Daytona, it was the SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Kenny Habul (2m06.491s) at the top, followed by the Riley Motorsports Mercedes of Ben Keating (+0.589s) and Scuderia Corsa's Christina Nielsen (+0.+0.803).

IMSA officials brought out the red flag around the halfway mark, bringing the field in after it saw too many track limit violations. The track returned to green with about 23 minutes remaining in the session.

UP NEXT: Practice 2, 3:55 p.m. ET.
