Montoya looks forward to Indy GP
With his month of May plans fully solidified, Juan Pablo Montoya can turn his focus to the IndyCar double – winning the IndyCar Grand Prix to complement his two Indy 500 wins.
Montoya, who will attempt to win his third Indianapolis 500 on May 28 for Team Penske, was also recently confirmed by the team for IndyCar's May 12-13 race on the IMS road course.
"It's always great to race in Indy," Montoya said. "There's a lot of focus on the 500 and that's understandable, but the Grand Prix has come a long way in a short time. The course is fast but still challenging. The fan support continues to grow. More people need to discover it because all of the races have been very competitive with passing and lead changes.
"For me, I'll be excited to get in an Indy car again for the month of May."
No driver has swept both Indy races since the road course race debuted in 2014. But Team Penske has dominated the Indy Grand Prix, with wins by Will Power in 2015 and Simon Pagenaud in 2016. Pagenaud also won the inaugural event in 2014 when driving for Schmidt Peterson Hamilton Motorsports.
Past Verizon IndyCar Series champions Ryan Hunter-Reay and Power have come closest to achieving the "May double" at IMS.
Hunter-Reay finished second behind Pagenaud in the inaugural race in 2014 before winning thee 500 later that month for Andretti Autosport. Power won the race and finished second to teammate Montoya in the 2015 Indy 500.
"I wanted to run the full season for Roger but I'm getting paid pretty well for only two races and I've got a great chance to win Indy again," Montoya told RACER's Robin Miller.
recently announced Daytona Prototype international program
in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, set to begin on a full-time basis in 2018.Although he is wary of joining a still-maturing program, developing a sports car for Penske is still a possibility in the future. When asked about it in the fall, Montoya said he is focusing on May.
"Let's worry about Indy first and then we'll figure things out as they come," he said. "If Roger and Tim (Cindric) know I'm going to stay, then they can do some long-term planning. I know I can focus on Indy and do other things if they come along."
