
Elliott leads opening Phoenix practice
Chase Elliott paced opening practice Friday morning at Phoenix International Raceway with a lap of 137.101 mph.
Coming off two consecutive top-five finishes, the Hendrick Motorsports driver will again look for his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory in Sunday's Camping World 500. Elliott was fastest of the four Hendrick cars, all of whom also placed in the top 10 in practice speeds.
Kyle Larson laid down a lap of 136.472 mph to end the session second fastest. Joey Logano, who started his day in a meeting in the NASCAR hauler with Kyle Busch, was third fastest at 136.441 mph. Martin Truex Jr. (136.168 mph) and Ryan Blaney (136.157 mph) rounded out the top five.
The 1 hour, 25-minute session had no major incidents.
The rest of the top 10 were Busch (136.090 mph), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (135.988 mph), Kasey Kahne (135.982 mph), Jimmie Johnson (135.931 mph), and Jamie McMurray (135.885 mph).
Defending Phoenix winner Kevin Harvick was 13th in practice at 135.701 mph.
