Hildebrand below track record at Phoenix test
Ed Carpenter Racing dominated the third practice session during IndyCar's Phoenix open test. JR Hildebrand dipped below Helio Castroneves' lap record of 192.631mph set in 2016 with a 193.234mph lap of the 1.022-mile oval in his No. 21 ECR Chevy. Teammate and team owner Ed Carpenter was second with a 192.404mph in the No. 20 Chevy as the all-American program – and most of its competition – completed low-downforce qualifying simulation runs which produced the impressive speeds.
"I'd be lying to you if I said it didn't feel good going out and putting a couple laps down and doing it to where we felt – they were legit," Hildebrand said. "We're not just out there toying around. It felt good."
Team Penske's Josef Newgarden (191.932mph), Helio Castroneves (191.668mph) and Will Power (191.637mph) rounded out the top five.
The fastest Honda-powered lap went to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports' Mikhail Aleshin in the No. 7 entry (191.079mph).
