More charges for former sports car racer Tucker

Former sports car racer and payday loan magnate Scott Tucker has received four additional criminal charges added to his wide-ranging federal indictment for unlawful debt collection and loan practices.

According to The Kansas City Star

, Tucker and his lawyer, Tim Muir, had the same four counts tacked onto their existing cases, and earlier this month, "both men appeared in federal court in Manhattan, N.Y., and pleaded not guilty to new charges of money laundering and wire fraud. A conviction of money laundering can carry a punishment of up to 20 years in prison and as much as $500,000 in fines."

At the heart of the various criminal complaints is the base structure of Tucker's numerous payday companies which were tied to Native American businesses. Some of Tucker's professional racecars bore logos of allegiance to those native ties.

"Tucker is accused of nominally setting up his businesses on American Indian tribes as a means to evade state usury laws," per The Star. "The indictment called Muir the architect of the scheme."

The latest development for Tucker pales in comparison to the news that landed in October,

when he was ordered to pay $1.266 billion

to the Federal Trade Commission for deceptive business practices that defrauded as many as 4.5 million customers.

A trial for Tucker and Muir has been set for April 17 to resolve the mounting charges.
