INDYCAR: Chilton returns to Ganassi

RACER.com has learned Max Chilton will be formally introduced Wednesday as the fourth driver for Chip Ganassi's IndyCar team. (UPDATE:

Now officially confirmed by the team

. -Ed.)

The 25-year-old Brit spent his rookie season with Ganassi in 2016, and it was assumed he would return to the No. 8 Dallara-Honda sponsored by Gallagher Financial. Chilton, who spent two years in Formula 1, had three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti as his full-time coach and produced some promising runs but finished a disappointing 19th in the Verizon series standings.

Chilton's best performance turned out to be his second race and oval-track debut at Phoenix, where he qualified eighth and finished seventh after running in the lead pack all evening.

His other top-10 finish came at Watkins Glen where he qualified sixth and finished 10th. He also qualified seventh at Road America.

Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Charlie Kimball and Chilton will be powered by Honda instead of Chevrolet in 2017 as the team tries to bounce back from a year that saw Ganassi only win twice (both by Dixon). The team

is set to test Friday

at Sebring International Raceway's short course.
