F1: Palmer 'couldn't see' in collision

Renault Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer said he had no visibility at all when he crashed into Daniil Kvyat and ended his Brazilian Grand Prix.

Kvyat and Palmer were running at the tail of the field as the Interlagos F1 race restarted after its second safety car period, having just pitted to replace a punctured intermediate tyre and to switch back to wets respectively.

The Renault ran into the Toro Rosso in heavy spray, putting Palmer out and leaving Kvyat to continue to 13th in a damaged car.

"When I crashed, I couldn't see a thing," Palmer related. "I had a lot more grip than the guys in front on the full wets and purely just couldn't see.

"I was coming up behind Kvyat and decided to go to the inside. I sort of knew roughly where he was, but really only from the low speed.

"As soon as we picked up speed, the spray was too much. I just couldn't see."

Kvyat said his Toro Rosso was "finished" after the hit from Palmer.

"The car was just undriveable – it was hard to do anything," said the Russian.

Although the race was interrupted repeatedly – taking over three hours to complete amid five safety car periods and two red flags – Palmer said conditions were only really difficult on the run onto the pits straight.

"You've got the water coming down and we've got so much torque now, with rivers on those kinks," he said. "On top of that, for the guys further back you've got no visibility. You can't really even pick your line through there.

"In the dry you don't even consider those corners. In the wet you need to know where they are. There was aquaplaning and I couldn't see anything."
