F1: Grosjean crashes on way to Interlagos grid

Romain Grosjean will miss the Brazilian Grand Prix after crashing his Haas Formula 1 car on the way to the grid in wet conditions at Interlagos.

As heavy rain fell, the Haas driver lost control of his car while accelerating up the hill out of Juncao onto the pits straight. The back end of the Haas immediately stepped out, sending Grosjean into a spin and sideways into a wall, breaking the front-left suspension.

Grosjean clambered out of the car unharmed, but put his hands to his eyes as he opened his visor. He was subsequently taken to the circuit medical center, where he was given the all-clear.

The incident immediately led to a three-minute virtual safety car period covering other drivers' reconassance laps while the Haas was recovered.

Soon after polesitter Lewis Hamilton radioed back to his Mercedes team to declare the conditions "really quite dangerous out there, quite slippery" and predicting "carnage" at the start.

Grosjean was confirmed at Haas for 2017 on Friday and went on to equal his best qualifying result of the season with seventh on the grid.
