F1: Magnussen poised to switch to Haas for 2017

Kevin Magnussen is poised to sign a deal with Haas for the 2017 Formula 1 season.

Haas team principal Gunther Steiner confirmed ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix Magnussen was among the drivers it had held talks with in its efforts to find a teammate for Romain Grosjean for next year. Sources have revealed negotiations with Magnussen, in particular, have continued since the race in Mexico City to such an extent he is now set to agree a one-year contract.

Although Magnussen's preference was to remain with Renault given its "ability to fight for championships in the future," the Dane has grown frustrated at the time the team is taking to make a decision.

Renault had an option on Magnussen's contract, the deadline on which he agreed to extend by two weeks, only for that to also lapse and allow him to open talks with other teams. Sources suggest Magnussen is not Renault's number one choice, which has further forced the 26-year-old's hand to look elsewhere.

Magnussen was on the radar of Haas last year prior to the team opting for Esteban Gutierrez as partner for Grosjean, with Steiner recently remarking they "have always kept in touch" as "he's a driver who has a place in F1."

Magnussen's capture would place the future of Gutierrez in doubt, although he is among those being considered for the second seat at Renault alongside Nico Hulkenberg. Gutierrez has so far failed to score a point on his return to F1 this season, although he has finished 11th on five occasions.

Jolyon Palmer also remains in the frame, while Renault has not given up hope of luring back Esteban Ocon following his spell as a reserve earlier this year prior to him joining Manor in August, even though he appears set to switch to Force India.
