INDY LIGHTS: Jones leads Monterey FP1

Championship hopeful Ed Jones made the first statement of the Soul Red Finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca by leading the opening session of the weekend by placing his Carlin Racing entry atop the field.

The Briton, who

sits one point championship leader Santiago Urrutia

, was comfortably fastest after posting a 1m16.509s lap during an abbreviated session. Andretti Autosport's Dean Stoneman (-0.503) and Team Pelfrey's Sean Rayhall, making his series return, completed the top three (-0.517).

Urrutia was sixth fastest among the 15-car field (-0.928), Watkins Glen winner Zach Veah, who was best among the Indy Lights rookies during Thursday's IndyCar test at Sonoma, could only manage ninth (-1.332) as his Belardi Racing entry struggled to put down its power.

The 30-minute session endured two red flags for Juncos Racing's Zachary Claman De Melo who made contact during his second incident, which gave drivers little more than 20 minutes to get acclimated to the 2.3-mile circuit.

UP NEXT: Free practice 2, 4:45 p.m. PT
