MOTOGP: Extent of Smith's leg injury still unclear

Tech3 Yamaha MotoGP rider Bradley Smith is set to leave hospital on Saturday, but the full extent of his leg injury remains unclear.

A week before the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Smith was representing Yamaha in the final round of the Endurance World Championship when he fell after making contact with a slower rider in practice at Oschersleben on Thursday. While he was cleared of the initially-suspected broken femur, he has remained in hospital.

He is expected to be discharged on Saturday with ligament damage, but a statement on the 25-year-old's website said "the full extent of his injuries are still unknown.

"A deep cut to his leg resulted in surgery yesterday, and as a result it is still very swollen so doctors are not in a position to make an accurate diagnosis yet. There is currently no certainty about when Bradley will back on the bike."

Currently 15th in the MotoGP standings, Smith will move to KTM's new program in 2017 along with current Tech3 teammate Pol Espargaro.
