MOTOGP: Sachsenring holds onto German GP

The Sachsenring will continue as the host of MotoGP's German Grand Prix until at least 2021.

A contract extension for Germany as a nation was announced during last month's leg of the 2016 season, but with the Sachsenring as the likely rather than confirmed venue.

Now a deal has been struck between Dorna and race promoter the ADAC for the grand prix to stay at the Sachsenring for the next five years.

The Sachsenring has hosted the German GP since 1988 and 2017 will mark the venue's 90th anniversary, going back to its origins as a road race in the nearby village of Hohenstein-Ernstthal.

"The Sachsenring is certainly the most ideal venue for a German motorcycle Grand Prix," ADAC Sport president Hermann Tomczyk said. "I am therefore very pleased that it will now be hosting a world championship race for the coming years.

"The event has been a huge success ever since 1998. Thanks to the dedicated work of all those involved, we can now look forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the German Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sachsenring next year.

"My thanks also to Dorna Sports for their patience during the negotiations over the past months and to all the people on our side who have dedicated themselves to securing the future of the German world championship race."
