INDY LIGHTS: Veach, Chaves test oval tires at IMS

Having played a part in the closest finish in Freedom 100 history this past May, Cooper Tires looked to confirm its tire specification for next year's race during a test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday. Current Indy Lights driver Zach Veach and 2014 series champion Gabby Chaves tested Belardi Auto Racing Dallara IL-15s for half a day before rain forced the end of the test.

"We were one (dry track) window shy of running a full race simulation," Chris Pantani, Cooper Tires director of motorsports, told Indycar.com. "We still feel comfortable that we found something that we will certify (as the race tire spec) for next year."

In May's promoter test at IMS, Veach became the first Indy Lights driver in history

in the Dallara IL-15 chassis when he turned an unofficial lap at 201.455mph (44.6751 seconds), in the series' first of two test sessions. This year's Freedom 100 continued the recent trend of nail-biting finishes, with Dean Stoneman beating Ed Jones in the closest Indy Lights Freedom 100 finish in history.

"We want to replicate [the 200mph lap] for the racing," Pantani said.

Pantani told Indycar.com that the drivers were happy with the ability of this year's tire to allow the cars to race high and low on the 2.5-mile oval.

This is how Veach spent his rain delay.

Cooper Tires will hold a second test on Aug. 24 on the IMS road course to help determine its tire specification for all 2017 road circuits.
