No. 20 Gas Monkey PC Takes 4th Overall at Lime Rock Park

Matt McMurray and Johnny Mowlem virtually willed the No. 20 Gas Monkey / Southwest Funding PC to a 4th place finish this weekend at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut for the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championships.  

“Johnny and Matt really get the credit for this one,” said Michael McLaughlin, one of BAR1’s engineers. “Lime Rock is a quick 1.5 mile circuit and while the PC cars had a slight edge over the GTLM lap times, the two classes spent a lot of time fighting for the same real estate.”

“Our strategy was to make the most of our pit stops,” added McLaughlin  “We were one of two cars to come in on the first yellow. We chose to put on tires and it paid off. Our competitors wound up having to stop under green and we were able to move up in the field. It was a great call and our pit guys performed flawlessly. Unfortunately, later in the race, the yellow came about four or five laps to early. We were unable to maximize our field and forced to put on tires earlier than we would have liked. Has we got closer to the end, while running in third, Johnny was fighting a lose condition on a very hot and slick track. Ultimately the 38 car was able to catch and pass Johnny with just a few minutes left in the race.”

“All-in-all, I’m happy with where we are at,” said Michael. “Given the challenges we’ve had in the past few weeks, I’m confident we’re moving in the right direction. With the track length, the traffic and the heat conditions, we worked well as a team. We have a good car heading into Road America.”

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will head to Road America for the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase to run August 5-7.
