GP3: McLaren junior de Vries takes first pole

McLaren protege Nyck de Vries claimed his first GP3 pole position with the final lap of a scrappy qualifying session at the Hungaroring.

The ART driver came out on top as a number of drivers struggled for grip with lower track temperatures and several had track limit issues. It looked as if Koiranen GP's Matt Parry would hold on for pole before de Vries snatched it away with a lap of 1m32.979s, which put the Dutchman 0.4 seconds clear of the Briton.

Ferrari junior Antonio Fuoco had been engaged in close battle with Parry for the top stop in the closing minutes of the session, but the Trident driver had to settle for third.

Jake Dennis had a time deleted for exceeding track limits midway through the session and he ended up fourth for Arden, with Nirei Fukuzumi fifth for ART.

Championship leader Charles Leclerc was sixth, a day after he made his second Formula 1 practice appearance for Haas.

Jack Aitken finished seventh for Arden, one spot in front of title challenger and Silverstone race winner Alexander Albon.

Recent Formula 3 convert Arjun Maini and Ralph Boschung rounded out the top 10 for Jenzer Motorsport and Koiranen.

Campos driver Alex Palou and DAMS' Jake Hughes both appeared at the top of the standings early on, but could only manage 12th and 19th, respectively, while Haas F1 development driver Santino Ferrucci will start down in 22nd.

Steijn Schothorst, who lost the top spot due to a track limits infringement at the halfway stage, caused a red flag late in the session when he came to a stop on the exit of Turn 7 and had to be recovered by the marshals.
