
INDYCAR: Kanaan starts fast in Iowa practice
Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves led the way during Saturday morning's practice period for Sunday's Iowa Corn 300.
Kanaan, the 2010 winner whose led 523 laps at Iowa Speedway in his career, turned a lap of 17.219 seconds (186.902mph) in the NTT Dallara-Chevrolet during a 90-minute session prior to Saturday afternoon's qualifying. Castroneves, winless since 2014, was close behind his Brazilian buddy at 17.241 (186.664mph) in the Team Penske Chevy.

Josef Newgarden, driving with a broken right clavicle and bone in his right hand, showed no ill effects by posting the third-quickest lap at 17.249 (186.585mph) in the Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet.
Scott Dixon posted the fourth-fastest lap of 17.296 (186.074mph) in Chip Ganassi's Chevy while point leader Simon Pagenaud ranked fifth overall with a lap of 17.323 in his Chevy as the Bow Tie brigade claimed nine of the top-10 speeds.
Ryan Hunter-Reay spun early in the session and hit the Turn 4 wall but returned in time to post the ninth best lap at 17.425 in the best Honda showing. Teammate Marco Andretti also spun in almost the same place but made a great save and didn't contact the wall.
