INDYCAR: Menards added for two more races

Simon Pagenaud’s fetching dayglow Menards livery will appear at two more rounds this year, according to the championship-leading Frenchman. Pagenaud’s No. 22 Team Penske Chevy raced with the bright yellow paint scheme for the first time in May at the Indy Grand Prix, and it remained on the car for the 100th running of the Indy 500.

It also appeared last weekend in Wisconsin on IndyCar’s return to Road America, and as Pagenaud confirmed via Twitter, Menards has signed on to sponsor his car at the next round in Iowa on July 10, and at the Pocono event on August 21.

“I’m super excited because of the recognition of the Menards brand, and how much John Menard has done for the sport, and the legacy of what John and Roger Penske has done,” Pagenaud told RACER. “And this is amazing for my own brand recognition, and to grow the awareness for IndyCar and the team. Everybody seems to love the yellow car!”

Pagenaud endured a frustrating race at Road America, where a podium finish fell through in the final laps when his twin-turbo V6 engine began running on five cylinders. The problem left Pagenaud in 13th at the checkered flag. Teammate Will Power earned his second consecutive win and moved into third in the standings.

Entering Road America, Pagenaud was 80 points clear of Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and 117 ahead of Power. A fire in Dixon’s engine bay early in the race left the defending series champion in last place, and prior to his own engine problems, Pagenaud was primed to capitalize on the New Zealander’s bad luck and push further ahead of the field.

Dixon fell from second to fifth in the championship, promoting Penske teammate Helio Castroneves to second. Castroneves (-74 points) and Power (-81 points) have the team in a strong 1-2-3 championship formation with seven races left to run. Juan Pablo Montoya, the fourth member of the Penske squad, is ninth in the standings, 116 behind Pagenaud.
