Three men are facing assault charges after former NASCAR driver Mike Wallace and his daughter were attacked Friday night after a concert in Charlotte.
According to Wallace, he and members of his family were leaving a concert by country band Rascal Flatts in Charlotte when they were attacked in the parking lot by a group of several people in the parking lot, knocking Wallace unconscious and causing injuries to his mouth, nose and eye. He required several stitches and lost three teeth. On Facebook, he posted that he sustained a concussion.
Charlotte police confirmed to USA TODAY Sports and local media that three men were arrested, there was no previous relationship between the suspects and Wallace and no weapons were used in the incident. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's website says that each was charged with simple assault and posted $1,000 bond.
According to the police report obtained by USA Today Sports, the victims "were kicked and punched several times in the head, face and stomach by the listed suspects following a verbal altercation."
Wallace told WSOC-TV he approached the suspects' vehicle and asked if they enjoyed the show, at which point, he said, they started screaming and attacked him.
"You don't go to an event, you don't go to a park thinking you're gonna get your butt beat, and if I'm going to I at least want to know why I got beat," he said.
Daughter Lindsay Wallace Van Wingerden, who sustained minor injuries as she jumped on top of her father to protect him, told WSOC "it scares us to think that we can't even go to a concert together or any of it without somebody going to attack you or something else."
In 2015, Wallace, his son Matt and daughter Chrissy made history as the first father-daughter-son team to all compete in a national series.
