'Metal of Honor' book offers unique insights into Indy 500 history
Among the unique attributes of the Indianapolis 500 is the Borg-Warner Trophy, which incorporates the likeness of each winner (left). First unveiled at a 1936 dinner hosted by then-Speedway owner Eddie Rickenbacker, the trophy was officially declared the annual prize for Indianapolis 500 victors, each of whom receives a smaller facsimile or "Baby Borg" while the original is permanently housed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
For Indy's 100th Running of the 500, BorgWarner commissioned a hardcover book, "Metal of Honor, The History of the Borg-Warner Trophy," to commemorate its longtime association with the great race's iconic trophy.
The book was presented to drivers, car owners and other VIPs during the month of May. Less than 2,000 copies remain, which Borg-Warner is now offering for sale to the public for just $30 – a bargain for this 136-page treasure trove of photos, historical facts and recaps of the first 99 runnings of the race.
