F3: Ilott keeps win after stewards' hearing

The 17-year-old Briton passed Gunther into Turn 4 just as the safety-car boards came out for a Turn 2 collision at the tail of the pack. While Ilott thought the move had happened before the race went under caution, Gunther - who finished third - believed he was still in front when the boards appeared. But officials decided no action was warranted.

"I got a good start but messed up the first corner and the second," said Ilott. "Maxi got the run and overtook me, but then he overshot Turn 3 a little bit and lost it on the exit, so I got the run. I was just clear of him when I got the safety-car message - I think it was quite close."

Gunther said: "I saw it [the message] on my dash when I was still in the front. As Callum said it is difficult to see, but in my opinion I was in front. But hopefully we all got the safety-car signal at the same time."

It was not all good news for Ilott's squad Van Amersfoort Racing, as the winner's team-mate Anthoine Hubert was penalised twice for indiscretions in the race.

Hubert has been given a three-place grid penalty for contact at Turn 2, and a five-second time penalty - for track-limits offences - drops the Frenchman from 12th to 16th in the results.
