F3: Tan takes Piquet seat at Red Bull Ring

Promising Malaysian Weiron Tan has taken the Carlin seat for this weekend's Formula 3 European Championship round at the Red Bull Ring that Nelson Piquet Jr hoped to occupy last time out at Pau.

It represents a return to European racing for the 21-year-old, who was fourth in the Pro Mazda series with Andretti Autosport on the IndyCar feeder ladder last year. Tan was runner-up in the 2013 Formula Renault BARC series with Fortec Motorsport in 2013, and was a two-time race winner in the German F3 Cup with Van Amersfoort Racing the following season.

He started a second Pro Mazda season this year with Team Pelfrey, only for the parties to split after the second race weekend.

Autosport understands that the deal is a one-off at present, although there are several weeks before the next Euro F3 round at the Norisring.
