Practice for the veterans began shortly after 2 o'clock on Monday under sunny skies and 62-degree temperatures.
***5:40 p.m.: Andretti Autosport's five-car armada sits atop the speed chart with Andretti, Munoz, Hunter-Reay, Rossi and Bell -- the last two both topping 226mph.5:35 p.m.: USAC standout Bryan Clauson passed his refresher course in the morning and ran 224.767mph in the late afternoon in the Byrd's Catering Honda of Dale Coyne. He finished third on Sunday night in a sprint car race at Kokomo -- his 56th race of 2016 in his quest to run 220 times.***5:25 p.m.: Andretti gets a monster tow from teammate Munoz and posts the day's best lap of 228.978 mph with Munoz right behind at 228.945mph.5:20 p.m.: Hunter-Reay clocks a 228.033mph lap running in a train of eight cars.***5:00 p.m.: Yellow light for a track inspection right after Tony Kanaan turned a 224.265mph lap in the NTT Data Chevy.4:45 p.m.: Carpenter improved to 224.7mph without a tow.4:30 p.m.: Ryan Hunter-Reay went to the top of the charts with a lap of 227.554mph in the DHL Honda during a team towing session with Andretti and Munoz, who both turned 226mph during their six-lap run.***4:00 p.m.: Simon Pagenaud, winner of three straight IndyCar races, checked in at 221.823 in the Menard's Chevy.3:40 p.m.: Ed Carpenter, a two-time polesitter, unloaded with a lap of 222.842 in the Fuzzy's Vodka Chevy.
3:30 p.m.: Rookie Alex Rossi continued Andretti Autosport's good afternoon by turning 224.025mph.***
3:05 p.m.: Marco upped his best lap to 224.595mph.3:00 p.m.: Carlos Munoz, who has finished second and fourth in his two Indy starts, gave Michael Andretti something to smile about by posting a 226.098mph on his third hot lap.2:50p.m.: Coming off a stellar drive in Saturday's Angie's List Grand Prix when he charged from 24th to fourth, Graham Rahal ran 222.946mph in the Steak & Shake Honda.2:45 p.m.: It only took Scott Dixon six laps to find 224mph in the Target/Chevy, which was almost two mph faster than Will Power's best of 223.801mph, which was second fastest at the time.2:30 p.m.: Marco Andretti crested 222mph in his Snapple Honda on his second lap.2:20 p.m. ET: Townsend Bell (above, awaiting his refresher test), driving the fifth car for Andretti Autosport, only took seven laps to reach 223.288mph in his Dallara-Honda. "Feels good right out of the box, now we'll see how it handles with some other cars out there," said the color analyst for NBCSN and sports car driver who competes once a year at Indianapolis.
