GP2: Giovinazzi penalty gives Marciello Race 2 pole

Antonio Giovinazzi has been penalized for his last-lap clash with Raffaele Marciello in the

first Barcelona GP2 racerace

, while Marciello finds himself with pole for Sunday.

Marciello had fought through to eighth place and reverse grid pole in the closing stages of Saturday's season opener, only to end up in the Turn 4 gravel after a hit from Giovinazzi on what had appeared to be the final racing lap.

At the time, just over a minute had remained on the clock – the race running to its one-hour time limit rather than the scheduled 37 laps following two earlier safety car periods – and ended under yellow due to Marciello's stranded car.

Organisers later ruled that the result should be taken from the end of lap 33 due to the checkered flag having been accidentally shown early.

That nullified the effect of Marciello and Giovinazzi's lap 34 collision and meant the former Ferrari junior kept eighth place and returned to race two pole.

Giovinazzi was given a 20-second time penalty in lieu of a drive-through for causing the tangle and consequently dropped to 18th place, with Oliver Rowland and Gustav Malja rising to ninth and 10th.

Another effect of the result being taken from lap 33 was that Alex Lynn's last-gasp move on Sergio Canamasas for fifth was cancelled out, putting the Carlin driver back into the top five.
