INDYCAR: Hinchcliffe to donate to Alberta fire victims

James Hinchcliffe will donate his winnings from this weekend's Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis to the Canadian Red Cross to help families displaced by the massive wildfire burning near Fort McMurray, Alberta.

"It is heartbreaking to see so many people who have lost their homes," Hinchcliffe told the constituents of
his fictional city of Hinchtown

on his personal website

. "The Canadian Red Cross has been doing a tremendous job. We just pray that the weather will co-operate and any further damage can be contained. In the meantime I want to offer support for those affected."

According to Hinchcliffe's statement, the Canadian Red Cross' fire relief effort will support more than 14,000 families and 12 communities that have been affected by the wildfire, which could burn for months. The CBC reported Monday that the fire has scored 161,000 hectares (close to 622 square miles).

Hinchcliffe has been lobbying for more races in his native Canada, and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports co-owner Ric Peterson has been part of an effort to bring an IndyCar race to Calgary, Alberta, with a tentative date of September 2017.
