FE: Carroll in line to fill in for da Costa

Adam Carroll is in the frame to replace Antonio Felix da Costa at Team Aguri for the Berlin Formula E round.

The team has submitted the GP2 race winner, who won the 2008-'09 A1GP title for Team Ireland, to the FIA as part of its Berlin entry and Carroll was part of the Fanboost list the championship published on Monday, although a deal between Carroll, whose main 2016 program is a World Endurance Championship GTE Am campaign, and Team Aguri has not yet been completed.

A Team Aguri spokesperson said: "We will be making an announcement about our driver line-up for the Berlin ePrix shortly. We have been in conversation with a number of drivers and will provide more information in due course."

Da Costa has to miss the Berlin race because of clashing BMW DTM commitments at the Red Bull Ring. Aguri team principal Mark Preston had targeted a driver with FE experience to replace the Portuguese.

Carroll tested with Mahindra last summer, and appeared in Buenos Aires as the team's reserve driver in case Nick Heidfeld was unfit to race.

He said at the time that "of course this is where I want to be," adding: "It's a proper world championship, with a very exciting concept. As a professional driver I don't see how you can't be interested in it."

FE changed its rules for season two to stop teams changing drivers in the final three events, to avoid any influence over the title run-in. That regulation tweak also limited the number of driver changes over a season to two.

Aguri has already made two changes to its line-up, replacing Nathanael Berthon with Salvador Duran after three races then dropping Duran in favour of Ma Qing Hua before the last race in Paris.

Da Costa's DTM commitments are unlikely to be deemed force majeure, but he is set to return for the planned London finale at the cost of a financial penalty for the team. The Ma change came the same day as the team revealed it was in discussions over a change of ownership, understood to be a bid from a Chinese investment company. Ma has been entered as Aguri's second driver for Berlin.
