NHRA: Frigo recovering after Houston crash
NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series racer Sidnei Frigo is recovering in a Houston hospital after a serious crash during the second round of Friday's qualifying at Royal Purple Raceway, the NHRA announced Saturday.
Frigo, 44, was second fastest after the first round of qualifying. During his second-round qualifying run against Mike Castellana, Frigo lost control of his turbocharged Corvette, crossed the center line at the finish before taking a sharp left, flying up, hitting the left-hand wall and then rolling – both in the air and on the ground – before coming to a stop in the grass. He registered a speed of 240mph when the car took out the finish line timing reflectors.
He was reported to be conscious and responsive as he was extricated and airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken left arm. He had corrective surgery Saturday and is out of surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Frigo, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Frigo, a former NHRA Top Fuel and Top Alcohol Dragster racer, was the No. 1 qualifier earlier this year at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.
