INDYCAR: Schmidt still unsure about third Indy 500 entry

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports co-owner Sam Schmidt has entertained almost every driver with a budget and desire to race in May's 100th Indianapolis 500. After months of fruitless discussions, he says a deal for someone to compete in SPM's third car for the Indy 500 has yet to be completed.

"I've just given up putting a date on finishing it," Schmidt told RACER at Long Beach. "I thought it was going to be done 90 days ago. Things just keep moving and parts keep moving. We've been rubbing on the car since October, and it's ready to go."

With a costly 2015 season fresh in his mind, Schmidt says there's no guarantee the third Honda-powered SPM car will be entered.

"It's a half-million-dollar car, and since I wrote off two of those last year, I'm not looking to do it just for giggles this year," he said. "If we're going to do it, it has to be the right package all the way around, and we haven't found that yet."

Practice for the Indy 500 begins in 27 days.
