VW WRC wins Rally Car of the Year

Volkswagen's Polo R World Rally Championship car was crowned the Rally Car of the Year at the Autosport Awards.

The German brand has dominated the WRC since returning in 2013, and added its third consecutive manufacturers' crown and drivers' title for Sebastien Ogier to its records this year. Ogier won eight rallies during the season, while team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen also took the Polo to victories.

In a 13-rally season, Volkswagen claimed 12 wins and finished the year with nearly twice the points haul of second-placed Citroen.

Volkswagen's motorsport boss Jost Capito and technical leader Francois-Xavier Demaison accepted the award from three-time British rally champion Mark Higgins.

"It was yet again a fantastic year," said Demaison. "And we finally won in Germany, which was tough."
