F1: Mercedes W06 named top Racing Car

The Mercedes-Benz F1 W06 Hybrid that dominated the 2015 Formula 1 season claimed Racing Car of the Year honours at the Autosport Awards.

Engineering director Aldo Costa, technology director Geoff Willis, performance director Mark Ellis, head of aerodynamics Mike Elliott and chief designer John Owen, plus head of performance engineering Owen Jones and engineering director Hywel Thomas from engine arm Mercedes High Performance Powertrains collected the award from four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti.

"We wanted to demonstrate that we were able to win a second time, and win multiple championships," Costa said. "I think we have achieved almost everything we wanted to achieve.

Mercedes has now dominated the past two F1 seasons, monopolising the drivers' title fight with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and running away with both constructors' crowns. This season's W06 won 16 of the year's 19 grands prix and started from pole position in all bar one.

The team's winning margin in the constructors' contest was 275 points from Ferrari, the equivalent of just over six one-two finishes.

Mercedes' main F1 rivals the Ferrari SF15-T and Williams FW37 were also nominated in the category, along with Formula E's Spark SRT_01E, the Le Mans 24 Hours and World Endurance Championship winning Porsche 919 Hybrid and the ORECA 05 that KCMG took to LMP2 victory at Le Mans.
