Real GT350 onboard Classic24
This is Scott Turner in his Savannah Race Engineering period-spec 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang. The car was originally a Hertz rent-a-racer turned real racer in the early '70s. As the story goes, a father and son were driving home from a local SCCA race and spotted the Hertz Mustang on a used car lot. They stopped to look, the dealer wasn't very happy to have the car as it was part of an estate sale and he thought it difficult to sell because it had no interior and big bars running through it. Father and son made an offer of $1,000 and were racing it not too long after.
The new owners went on to win the Southeast division in SCCA three times. The car is absolutely gorgeous, with R-Spec gauges, period seats, wooden 16-inch steering wheel like the early two digit GT350s Mustangs had, and a small block Ford that sounded wonderful on the high banks of Daytona.
This video is from "dawn patrol" at the Classic 24 from Daytona, Group A on Sunday morning. Turner went on to win the class. He plans to continue to race the car in period prep as much as safety will allow.
