WEC: Hoy makes LMP2 test debut

Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy made his LMP2 test debut on Monday, as his prize for winning the European Le Mans Series LMP3 title alongside Charlie Robertson.

Hoy completed 40 laps of Estoril in Greaves Motorsport's Gibson-Nissan, despite arriving at the Portuguese track late due to delays caused by fog in the UK.

"The Gibson-Nissan is an incredible car," said Hoy. "I immediately felt comfortable and was excited to find that the car does exactly what you ask it to do and really encourages you to use the downforce it delivers.

"It was wet today but even though the track was slippery I had lots of grip. I would love to race that car at Le Mans – in fact, I want to get back in it straight away.

Team boss Jacob Greaves said Hoy drove "extremely well" during the test.

"I was impressed with Chris today," said Greaves. "He arrived behind schedule but immediately focused on the job he had to do. His lap times were consistent despite the bad weather and he impressed our engineer with his driving.

"We ran him all the way through until darkness fell and it was good to see that the change in light didn't faze him at all."

Nissan-backed Hoy is aiming to make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut in LMP2 next season. He has already tried the track in his LMP3 car at this year's pre-race test day. His teammate Robertson will get his prize LMP2 test on Tuesday.
