WRC: Gronholm tests 2017 VW on asphalt
Marcus Gronholm drove Volkswagen's 2017 Polo R WRC mule for three days on asphalt in France last week. The Finn was testing in classic Monte Carlo stages around Roquesteron and Col de Bleine in the German firm's first asphalt development running of its next-generation machine.
Volkswagen's technical project leader Francois-Xavier Demaison said the car hadn't taken any significant steps forward from its first test in Finland in the summer.
"It's just the tarmac version of the car," said Demaison. "It's our laboratory car – it's not the 2017 Polo, it will look different to this.
"We are running the big wing, the big front splitter, to help look at the reliability and things like that. We are working on the differential controls, the hydraulic circuits, gear shifting, that kind of thing."
Demaison admitted work was beginning to move through the gears on the full 2017 car, though.
"It really is just around the corner," he added. "We have to make the homologation at the end of next season and this is really coming fast now."
