FORMULA E: Williams FE battery wins award
The Formula E battery designed by Williams Advanced Engineering has received a technical award.
Williams' battery, which is designed to provide 200kWh of energy and run at a peak power of 200kW, has been awarded the Royal Automobile Club's Simms Medal. It was earned in recognition of the battery's technology and ability to influence future road car design. John Wood, chairman of the RAC's technical committee, called it "a design, technological and packaging marvel."
Williams was brought in late to the all-electric championship's Spark SRT_01E project, but successfully supplied 40 batteries, plus spares, to the 10 competing teams. The company claims that translated into just one failure from 440 starts.
WAE managing director Craig Wilson said he was "thrilled and honored" to receive the award.
He added: "Our battery technology has been fundamental to the Formula E series in its inaugural season, and we are proud of how it has stood up to the test in what was a very aggressive development and testing program."
Previous winners of the Simms Medal include Nissan LMP1 team principal and technical director Ben Bowlby in 2012, for the DeltaWing project, and Formula E supporter Lord Paul Drayson the year after for the Drayson B12/69 LMP-type EV racing car.
