GP3 race canceled after Sainz crash

The opening GP3 race of the weekend at Sochi has been cancelled due to extensive barrier repairs, following Carlos Sainz Jr.'s accident in Formula 1 free practice.

Race one was due to run between final F1 practice and qualifying on Saturday but the FIA made the decision to cancel the race to prevent the rest of the day's schedule being disrupted.

Sainz made heavy contact and buried his Toro Rosso into the barriers at Turn 13 after appearing to lose control under braking. The Spaniard was airlifted to hospital but was

found to have suffered no injuries

.

As a result of the accident the practice session was red flagged with 15 minutes remaining, so the marshals could help remove his car and repair the damaged barrier and guardrail.
