Audi building 45 new R8 GT3s

Audi will build 45 customer examples of its second-generation R8 GT3 racer ahead of the 2016 season.

The order book for the new R8 LMS, which claimed victory in the Nurburgring 24 Hours during its development year in 2015, has now opened and production of the first customer examples will begin on Sept. 21.

Deliveries to customers will then start on Oct. 26. The run of 45 2016 R8s will be complete by the end of March 2016.

The new R8, which replaces the first-generation car introduced in 2009 and its various evolutions, retails a 359,000 euros ($400,000) plus taxes and at 398,000 euros ($444,000) with a parts package.

The new R8 LMS was tested in competition through 2015 by the WRT and Phoenix teams in selected rounds of the Blancpain Endurance Series and VLN long-distance championship, as well as at the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

A total of 135 first-generation R8s have been built since the car's debut in 2009. That figure includes all evolutions of the car and the chassis produced for the one-make Audi R8 LMS Cup in Asia.
