IndyCar: Honda, Firestone make significant donations to Wilson Children’s Fund

Two of the biggest supports of IndyCar racing have combined to raise a significant amount of money through charitable efforts from last weekend's GoPro Grand Prix at Sonoma.

American Honda and Honda Performance Development, whose engines propelled the late Justin Wilson throughout his Verizon IndyCar Series career, pledged $50 for each lap completed by their 13 entries at Sonoma for the Wilson Children's Fund during the 85-lap event, and the final tally of $53,950 will be sent to the charity.

In addition to the money they donated, HPD president Art St. Cyr says Wilson will continue to inspire their efforts as IndyCar moves ahead without the talented Englishman.

"All of us in the Honda family are going to honor his memory in the best way we know: by continuing to fight hard for race wins and championships," he noted.

IndyCar's official tire partners also pledged to support the Fund by contributing $25 for every Firestone tire used at Sonoma. With 1179 tires consumed, Bridgestone Americas/Firestone Racing have donated $29,475 to assist Wilson's wife Julia and his daughters Jane and Jess.

"Justin was a true racer's racer who exemplified that rare combination of pure talent, sportsmanship, grace and never give up attitude," said Lisa Boggs, director of Bridgestone Americas Motorsports. "He was part of our motorsports family and we miss him greatly. It is our honor to contribute $29,475 to the Wilson Children's Fund."

Combined, Honda and Firestone donated $83,425.

IndyCar's third keystone partner, Chevrolet, has also donated directly to the Fund, but in deference to the longstanding relationships between Wilson, Honda, and Firestone, has chosen to keep the amount of their contribution private.
