RACER: Visor Cam with Duncan Dayton, Lotus 79 at Monterey
If you’ve ever wanted to be Mario Andretti on the 1978 Formula 1 grand prix trail, here’s the next-best thing to a time machine.
Former ALMS team owner/racer Duncan Dayton is fortunate to own one of the Lotus 79s Andretti wheeled during his championship-winning season, and as he demonstrated during last weekend’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, even a car like Colin Chapman’s 79 – the first high-downforce ground effects F1 chassis – can fall prey to oversteer.
In its day, the Lotus 79 was seemingly glued to every track it visited...which makes Dayton’s tail-happy adventure around the iconic 2.2-mile Monterey road course with 30 other vintage F1 cars a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
