Drivers slow down to sample state fair fare

It was easy to pick out the most recognized Verizon IndyCar Series driver visiting the Indiana State Fair on Aug. 11.

“Is that? It is Tony Kanaan. Can I get a selfie with you?”

Kanaan, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner, joined James Hinchcliffe, Conor Daly and series rookie Gabby Chaves – also a fair rookie – and other members of the Verizon IndyCar Series paddock for their annual visit to the fairgrounds.

As veteran fairgoers, Kanaan and Hinchcliffe had their own desired destinations:

Hinchcliffe had to have deep fried oreos and fried cheese; Kanaan had to have a grilled cheese from the Dairy Bar and Daly watched on as the group ate its way across the fair’s main street.

Chaves just wanted to take in the experience, which started with the Colombian eating a grilled bone-in pork chop and ended with the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year winning a prize for his girlfriend.

“I think I hurt my arm,” Chaves joked after clocking a pitch at 65 mph at the speed pitch carnival game. “At least I didn’t get a pit speed violation.”
