Magnussen’s Le Mans shunt bodywork on the auction block benefiting Camp Anokijig

Corvette Racing is hoping to turn a frown upside down during the upcoming Road America Continental Tire Road Race Showcase. Starting at noon on Saturday (August 8) in the Corvette Corral, Corvette Racing will have several pieces of bodywork from the No. 3 Corvette that was involved in a final qualifying shunt in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans last June.

Jan Magnussen was behind the wheel when the car speared off the road in the Porsche Curves making heavy contact with the wall that would ultimately force the crew to withdraw the car. A stuck throttle turned out to be the cause of the incident.

But their huge misfortune may be your gain, and it will certainly be for nearby Camp Anokijig.

Only a mile as the crow flies from the Road America pit lane, Camp Anokijig has stood since 1926 providing boys and girls from ages 7 to 16 with unforgettable and valuable life experiences. Dan Binks, crew chief on the No. 3 Corvette, was guest there as a young boy having attended from 1974 to 1976 and his father, Phil, before him in 1940. In 2006, the camp was put up for sale and Binks along with the other board members raised the funds to purchase the camp and keep it running as it has for the last 89 years.

Today, the non-profit camp depends on fundraising as an important part of the revenue needed to operate. No child is turned away from the camp for their inability to pay for the experience. Those who cannot afford to attend are offered a full sponsorship from the Camp, which today stands at approximately 30% of the attendees.

On auction this weekend will be a bevy of Corvette related bits and bobs from this year’s Le Mans race. The bodywork will be among the most prized which includes a hood, wings and possibly the most prized of all will be the rear clip which includes working tail lights. In addition to the bodywork, there will also be items such as used wheels, pit arm bands and passes and banners.

Corvette luminaries including Doug Fehan and drivers Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia from the No. 3 machine and Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner from the No.4 machine will be on hand and perhaps some other surprise guests as well.

If you cannot be in the Corvette Corral at noon on Saturday in Road America, but wish to bid on some of the items, contact Dan Binks through his Facebook page Dan Binks Racing.

Items are expected to go from $5 on up to $5000 for the most coveted bits, which will hopefully add up to the $20,000 goal for the weekend.
